  1. My next build is a factory sealed Monogram P-51B: This was a "sorry I goofed up your order" gift from an ebay vendor. I initially wasn't too interested because of the raised detail and all, but now I think I can tackle it and maybe do it a little justice. I'm not a rescriber -- it just looks terrible when I do it, so I have other plans, but more on that later. Can you imagine spending 99 cents on a model? I felt weird taking the shrink wrap off what I figured to be about a 45 year old kit. But, I did it and here's what I was greeted with when opening the box: I remember I had that same catalog when I was a kid! My dad gave it to me after one of his Monogram builds. Now I don't know when the kit came out, but it was probably pretty close to this: So that means the plastic in this box hasn't seen the light of day for around 45 years! I was amazed that decals were just about perfect, even though I won't be using them. So, I have done this kit before. When I was 12 or 13 I swiped it from my Dad's stash, along with the aftermarket decals he bought for it, and created this... erm.... "masterpiece"... That wasn't the first time I'd done "Shangri-la" either -- I'd swiped my Dad's Revell 1/32 P-51B which had "Shangri-la" as the scheme. So, my plan is to make a replacement using these decals: After that I will probably take the old kit, strip it down and re-make it with some other decals I have. Anyway... after that long preamble... The first step I plan to do on this build is to do something about the wheel wells, as seen here on the old model: I will attempt to scratch build some better looking wheel wells. BTW, does anyone know what those tabs sticking out around the opening are? It seems like they would interfere with the gear door.
  2. Italeri, Revell (likely a rebox of someone else's product), Zvezda and Hobby Boss all made the Hokum in 1/72 scale (let's not consider ESCI/ERTL early release) and I know that Zvezda boxed at least two different versions. So which one is best? Thanks all.
  3. Finished. Finally. It should take me two or three times less time, but... The most important is that I'm quite enjoyed at the end. Enjoy watching. WiP thread is here.
  4. Hello, Britmodellers! 👋 Well, it’s time to build something from a Century Series again... I’m looked for a pleasurable and straightforward project and choose the «Deuce» from MENG! I’m not a big fan of the Gentleman Scale, but this kit draws my attention. Let’s look at the box: The box is sturdy and filled with a well-packed plastic parts: The first sprue (A Parts) with a fuselage halves: It’s a big bird, even if it’s a 1/72nd scale! 😋 The second sprue (B Parts) has a wings and weapon bay doors: The C and D (x2) Parts sprues has a cockpit and weapon parts on it: F Parts sprue with a Case XX wing tips: The G Parts is a protected sprue with a canopy and landing lights parts: An instruction sheet looks very informative and the decal sheet is colorful and well-printed. I want to build a 196th FIS bird in an ADC Gray scheme with a California markings: Thanks for looking! 😎
  5. Hi all, After some stop-start work on her, I finally finished my latest Sabre. As you can see, she is depicted as a Sabre 4 of the Fuerza Aerea Hondurena. The based kit is Fujimi which I have modified in a simple way by removing the top fuselage intake, deleting a few of the odd access points and adding (by cheating with a decal) the small inlet on the fuselage sides. She was simple to build as always. The paints are Humbrol standard 116/117/118/28. I included a Pavla cockpit set but with the MB Mk10 seat that they used. The decals are a mix of Aztec (triangle and flag) and home printing (serials and weapons block). They didn't have any stencils, to my amazement, so nothing else was added. She was finished in Matt Cote after a dirty up with some Flory. I hope you like her. oh, and I just realised that I haven't installed the jet pipe!! Martin
  6. fit a little After deciding to use up some spare sprues from Armourfast and PSC I found that I couldpiece of Normandy into a small terrarium from a well known Scandinavian household store (JYSK not the other one!). the Armourfast Cromwell was looking forlorn after I used up one sprue for an ARV and decided that it could only go on a diorama on its own due to its overscale appearence when put next to my Revell Cromwells. I had some equally mismatched ESCI figures which are well detailed but also overscale for my other Normandy dios. Many of the 'action' poses are useless for most scenes but I discovered I could cut of their weapons and equipment with a scalpel and add it to other more suitably posed figures (some of them the old Airfix/Dapol railway figures which are ideal 1/72 and too big for 00 Gauge) I tried various 1/72 vehicles including the PSC M5 halftrack, a bren carrier, daimler Dingo from a white metal kit and a Humber scout car also from a metal kit. You can see the difference between the huge Armourfast Cromwell and the PSC one in the pics. Armourfast Cromwell: PSC Cromwell: PSC M5 halftrack and Humber scout car Daimler & Bren carrier I finally decided on the Armourfast Cromwell and the carrier (but added more stowage since these pics) the diorama roughly represents the actions of !st Polish Armoured Division on Mt Ormel in late August 1944 when they held the neck of the Falaise pocket closed. I was inspired to use this scenario because the hill has an embedded lane on its steep slopes.
  7. Hi Folks, its been a little while since I've posted anything on here so while I have a little time here are a couple of my latest builds for your perusal. Nothing remarkable, built straight out of the box and painted with Tamiya acrylics. Thanks for looking as usual all comments and criticisms are welcome.
  8. My new project - looking easy to build Grob Astir CS from Kovozávody Prostějov. I've chosen polish markings - SP-3703. Firstly I filled places for bottom air brakes - Grob Astir have only upper! Additionally I cut and shifted ailerons. In second step I glued fuselage halves, cut hole for wheel and add butt floor. Next I modified a seat and instrument panel shape (SP-3703 have different panel than others).
  9. Boosting the Carrier Air Wing with this Sword 1/72 TF-9J Cougar. Performing as a USMC Forward Air Controller. Parts. This is the Vietnam option.
  10. This is where I re-enlist for a second tour, with the Academy 1/72 F-4J Phantom - same kit as Enzo. I had this kit earmarked for Aces, but that's not getting to the bunfight. This kit was an Amazon purchase in 2015, for £22.95. An unusual kit in that it can be built snapfit, without cement, AND with stickers as well as decals. Aimed at the toy market - lets see about the model market then. Decals for Showtime 100, the US Navy's only Ace crew - Lieutenant Randall H. Cunningham (pilot) Lieutenant William P. Driscoll (RIO) This aircraft, this F-4J callsign Showtime 100, brought their third, fourth and fifth kills during a mission on 10 May 1972. The aircraft was shot down by a SAM, Cunningham and Driscoll reaching the sea before ejecting, and subsequent rescue. All disected in graphic detail on History Channels Dogfights (S1:E12) pilot episode, very exciting stuff. And a look at the parts, they're superb quality.
  11. Hipefully the pictures say it all. The Schneider, Saint Chomand and A7 are scratchbuilt the Renault, whippet and MK. IV are kits. Now to replicate the collection in 1/35
  12. And that's it, my first winter, snowy, whitewashed tank. WIP Somewhere in Karelia Cheers Mick
  13. Hi all, I'd like to join this GB with a 1/72 Bristol Blenheim 1f. It's the Revell kit, which I believe was originally produced by Frog in 1969 - I built a few Frog kits back in my youth, but not this one, I think! It's a project I intended to do years ago but never got around to, with an Airwaves etch set to tart it up a bit and decals from an FCM set, depicting an aircraft from 25 Squadron in September 1940. Cheers, David
  14. After my recent Brigand build you would have thought I'd learned my lesson, but 'the boys' have encouraged me to do this next: so apparently not. First flown in 1935 the Bombay was introduced in 1939 and retired in 1944. Wikipedia here and, as usual, no colour photos for reference so your guess is as good as mine. Luckily I build OOB and follow the instructions so I'm not too bothered - it's the build that's fun, IMHO (although not in my recent experience). Sprue shots: Three plastic, two clear, two PE (oh joy), IP film and resin engines. Decals for two schemes: - L5838, 216 Sqn RAF, Aldergrove, Northern Ireland 1939 and - my choice, L5813, 271 Sqn RAF, crashed 11.5.1940 in Betheniville, France, stalled on approach to the airfield and crashed killing four and injuring twelve. The usual picture only instructions on folded A5 pamphlet, which I won't bore you with but here's the first few steps: Looks like an interesting cockpit, good. Notice the inset panel in step 2 for attachment of PE. No, it's not clearer 'in the flesh'* Bit worried about this bent training edge: but this will no doubt add to the jeopardy and keep people interested. Hopefully. * Dbl-E, score 1, fnaar fnaar. Off to a good start, with the double entendres at least.
  15. This is what I will be building for this group build: Decals look like they’re cactus, but not worry as I’ll be using these, along with some other goodies: I won’t be starting this just yet as I want to finish my Harrier GR3 in the Helicopter, Autogyro & STOVL GB first. AW
  16. Hi there, F-102 & F-106 is looking to be a popular subject in this GB - which is no surprise as they are pretty cool airplanes I will join in with the Meng F-106: Box is literally full. Or bit more than full, all the parts don't really fit the box that well... I need a bigger box! It's a big pile of plastic. Not gonna take shots of each sprue... ... but just a detail shot showing the finely moulded panel lines - nice and crisp! Instructions and decals. But I will be using these aftermarket decals, 101st Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the Massachusetts Air National Guard´. That's a nice light blue that I will think look great. I just have to find a paint to match it as some of the details such as the insides of the airbrakes are painted with same/similar colour. Also thinking of getting the F-106 stencils by Fundekals as suggested by @Aardvark in another thread. Other aftermarket I have been thinking is the Master pitot tube (I'm always willing to use those, if available) and maybe the Meng resin sets but we will see. The kit looks pretty darn good as is. Thanks for looking in. Really looking forwards to building this bird
  17. With 'Shark' aggressor scheme. Decals courtesy of Twobobs. This is my third completed model and after painting and trying to pick out panel lines on this one, I'm learning of the need for more patience in surface preparation. This probably would've been so much nicer with better sanding and filling before I committed to paint and decals, and that's a lesson I can take into the next one.
  18. VPAF MiG-17PF 'Fresco-D', '4721', pilot Lam Van Lich, 921st 'Sao Do' FR, 3. February 1966 'First Nightfighter Kill' MiG-17PF, the uglier (?) radar equipped brother of the legendary MiG-17F. Even with the limited qualities of the radar, it gave VPAF some night fighter capability. Directed to the target area by ground controller and turning the radar on at the last possible moment to surprise the enemy. This tactic was pioneered by Lam Van Lich who took of alone in the evening of february 3rd 1966 to intercept Skyraiders. At the target area he detected and fired upon two Skyraiders - and got credited the first VPAF night kills (US sources do not confirm these kills). Kit: AZ model MiG-17PF Pt. 2 (#AZ7340) Scale: 1/72 Aftermarket: Master pitot tubes & guns, Eduard brassin wheels, Pavla seat Paints: Tamiya AS-12 spray can, Vallejo Model Color, Model Air & Metal Color Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Tamiya & MiG weathering products Bit of a challenging kit here and there and I'm not that happy with the overall tidyness (or lack of it) of my build. Built for Vietnam GB Build thread: All of my VPAF MiG-17 builds.
  19. Hi all. I have started this Bandai kit, magnificent as the others I have of the brand and theme. I did not feel like continuing with the models that I have running. I do not feel like for now correcting this, removing the other or modifying what is beyond; so I have taken this kit from all the ones I have from Star Wars (which are quite a lot and more complex and numerous in pieces). The interior is exactly the same as the TIE Fighter, only the figure obviously changes because this is Darth Vader's personal fighter. As a base color I have used Tamiya Neutral Gray. To the front and the inside I have applied a soft dry brush with the same Vallejo MC tone clarified with white, although I have reinforced some details by applying the color with the brush normally. The profiling of details has been with a very dark mixture of Tan oil and Black. The details on the back, the ones on the back of the D.V., are painted with Vallejo MC tones and highlighted in the same way. The figure of D.V. It is painted with several very dark shades of gray and with black the helmet, gloves and boots but I have given the coat a coat of matte varnish and I have given the helmet and boots a shiny finish. It really is a useless job, since I know with cause from the TIE Fighter that almost nothing is going to be seen of the cabin even using a flashlight. Andrés S.
  20. Hi everyone! The recently completed Battle of Britain group build has left me with a few kits in my stash that I didn't get to, so here I will present one of them. The first kit I've decided to pull out of my stash is the Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley. The kit is 1/72 Airfix, for which I've purchased Eduard's details set and masks set. I gather from other builds Eduard omitted a couple of windows so I'll have to do some extra masking (not too much I hope!). A couple of photos: Now to the subject. The particular aircraft I've decided to build is probably quite a famous one, or at least, it should be. It started life as a bomber and participated in nine bombing missions over France and Germany. Then in February 1942 it was used on a highly successful paratroop mission. After eight more bombing missions, this aircraft, along with its squadron, was transferred to Coastal Command where it hunted U-Boats in the Bay of Biscay. It even managed to spot one, although the U-Boat spotted the Whitley in time to crash-dive and escape. Quite an interesting service history then! Along the way the Whitley I'm building was flown by a number of different crews. One of its pilots was particularly well known, but it was also flown by other crews including one less-known pilot who later had a very lucky and dramatic escape in after evading six German fighters in another Whitley. I'll relate more on the story of this aircraft and its crews during the start of the build very soon! All the best, Matt
  21. Hi Everyone, My personal Spitfire mini group build has resulted in the first completed model. This is a very well known Tamiya's Mk.I. Much written about the pros and cons of the kit itself. Some say the wing shape is questionable but as I constructed it together with Eduard and Airfix kits - I did not observe any noticeable differences. I really enjoyed construction process. No fit issues, very little putty, ease of assembling, Not much aftermarket is used. In fact nothing apart of Eduard PE fret that mostly came into the cockpit. The main kit's drawback is the canopy that is not very thick but its sliding section is producing strong distortion perhaps due to variable thickness of the plastic. My intent was to make a BoB Spit, so an Xtradecal sheet was obtained. I chose the PRoJ machine (R6691) flown by Flight Lieutenant Frank J Howell of 609th Squadron. My original intent was to use kit's stencils and Xtradecal roundels, code and serials. However I became quite suspicious about the thickness of Tamiya decals and red on the Xtradecal sheet looked too brick to me. So I got a KitsWorld sheet for WWII fighters which also contained full stenciling set. The latter worked superbly. Zero silvering, none of the decals was damaged. Top class! Not much other insights. Top surfaces are Hobby Color H72 and H73, bottom side is Vallejo's Duck Egg Blue. Covered with gloss Tamiya finish pre-decals and then Micro Matt layer. Canopy is Future'd. Panel lines are highlighted with pencils, some dirt from Tamiya powders added as well as some Vallejo wash into larger recesses. More shots to enjoy! Thanks for watching! Kind regards, Dennis
  22. About 10 years ago I bought a bix cardboard box filled with about 25 unmade kits from a guy about 10 miles from me. I've made a couple of them since then but most remain in the stash either because the decals are shot or their subject matter doesn't quite fit with my "I only build aircraft from WW2" remit. This group build came along and gave me a reason to look at some of these kits as most of them are Smer reboxings of old Heller kits. I had assumed that by September 1939, the old MS225 was well out of service but some googling confirmed that they were still being used by what would come to be the Patrouille de France in 1959. In April 1939, they were still being used by the aerobatic team of Ecole de Perfectionnement de Pilotage, Salon-de-Provence. I understand this was the predecessor to Patrouille de France. https://avignonairshow2017.fr/histoire-de-la-paf/ I am going to build the MS225 with the colour scheme below. I wasn't able to find any other sources for the colour scheme of that period so I hope it is accurate of the period. Obligatory Box pic I'll be using the roundels and tail decals. Bagged Sprues Basic instructions There aren't many parts but they are reasonably detailed and there is hardly any flash.
  23. I bought an old Modeldecal sheet from Hannats to do a couple of matchbox Meteor NF kits that I had somehow acquired. This also had a somewhat colourful set of marking for a Hawk from 4 FTS/CFS in 1987: I am not at all au fait with Hawks or modern era (not that 1987 is modern) jets, so this may or may not work. It will be only OOB and the decals may well be interesting to apply!
  24. Beautiful little kit from Airfix, an absolute gem! Straight out of the box with kit decals. I’d quite happily make many of these in different colour schemes. I don’t often say that about kits.. Guy
