  1. The intake lip fit problems can be ured easily by throwing away the suggested build sequence .. (I'm on my 4th F-18 build at this point!) Assemble the intake trunking , and fit it to the lower fuselage , before the wings/upper fuselage gets fitted , that way you can adjust the fit to get everything square , once set , then add the rear fuselage side pieces, and add re-enforcing strips round all the inside of all joins , and TAKE YOUR TIME here - otherwise your in for a long re-scribing exercise . Also watch the upper /lower fuselage pieces, the panel lines become fairly faint where the pieces curve round from the horizontal, and you way want to enhance the lines there before you start gluing the front and rear fuselage join can also be a pain , however remember that most of it is hidden after the LEX's are added , but take a lot of time to offer the pieces up , and don't be afraid to clean un the joint areas , its one part of the kit that can make or break a build - Oh and have fun! - its a great model - take your time , and enjoy it!
  2. That is looking beautiful , superb work .. I built the WEM Resin hood back when it first came out in 1997 or so , my first ship kit - what a way to start ... I just wish I'd been able to produce something as good as your model back them ...
  3. There's a Thread here showing a superb build of a Shar well worth a look
  4. Well its just closed for £265 - more than a little rich for my blood ... I actually called my wife to get her to talk me out of bidding on it - yes I'm weak willed , and that was when it was sitting at £177.00 a
  5. All the best with the venture , the more people concentrating on modern subjects the better - and if you do stray in 32nd , you'll have one very happy customer this side of the pond for sure!
  6. I've had problems on most of my F-4's with the rear fuselage not fitting correctly, I think ignoring the option to use the screws to secure it is one option open to you , and I'd recommend using shims of card to fill in the more egregious gaps , the last 3 F-4's i found myself in a long and laborious job sanding and re-scribing missing detail at the back of the fuselage , all lost in efforts to get the piece to fit properly .. something that's getting to be a chore ! I don't think the intakes have any impact , on 2 of my builds I slapped together the kit intakes, very roughly , since I had nice FOD guard sets -to cover up the mess I made !- The B was different , as I said I use the CE intakes - and can recommend them very highly , they fit , actually better than the kit ones, once the cleaning up/prep work has been done You should be spared the problems I usually have getting the forward fuselage pieces to fit properly , usually caused by my inability to sand enough off the bottom the the BB pits ... Sorry to post the B pic - Ego got the better of me.. consider it a lapse on my part ....!
  7. That's shaping up to be a great Phantom.. the seats , as everyone else has said are excellent , I usually stick with Resin for mine , but I may be reconsidering I know what you mean about hacking up such a large expensive kit , but believe me , you get over it .. my last Tamiya F-4 was a B using CE F-4B conversion set CE F-4B Engines CE Seamless intakes BB F-4J Pit Eduard PE pit Stick that little lot on , and not a lot left of the original kit ... As for the BDR patches , I left them on my first ones , but latterly I've grown to hate them, however my wife loves a challenge , and she sands them off for me .. strange but true! I've tended to attach the metal piece for the back end of the fuselage early on in the construction , and cut the stablators , allowing them to be added at the end - I've found that the join of the "metal" piece is not all it should be, and its easier to clean up the joins with out the stabs in place The wing/fuselage join puzzles me - I've never had a join as bad as that , normally if you use screws securing the upper fuselage to the lower wing screws, and ensure the upper fuselage fits over the spreader inserts on the lower wing, everything lines up beautifully Drop me a PM f there's anything I've said that doesn't make sense , (Oh BTW I've just worked out I've done 8 Tamiya F-4's done so far!...argh!!!!) My B - for encouragement!
  8. Yup Rob Clements chose the wrong man to market his kit ... Hey as I said in another thread, I actually had one of those Buc kits in my hot little hands , until I sold it on, Idiot I am! To be honest is wasn't a patch on the Echelon Lightnings for example - the basics were all there , but it required a LOT more effort than I could give it ... better pray in the direction of china if you want another 32nd Buc!
  9. Well Mike , I bought , and indeed used your Black widows sheet, and a wonderful product it is . The big problem is that most modelers , if they venture out into 32nd only ever do one or two models , its really a small minority , like me, and the others over on Large Scale Planes, who work consistently in this scale . Why - Well cost is certainly a reason - post build storage space is also a reason , (a growing problem in my case), and the sheer intimidation factor in taking what seems to be a an overwhelming project . Now we LSP'ers are a minority , I accept that , and I acknowledge that our purchasing power will never match those who regularly buy half a dozen 48th F-16's at a time , and since it costs the same I guess to produce a 48th scale sheet vs a 32nd scale one - its pretty obvious what's going to sell more . So what's to be done - well until 32nd achieves some kind of breakthrough to the mainstream , and bless Trumpeter for at least trying to do that , I guess we LSP'ers will just have to get used to disappointment.... However , trying to go out on an optimistic note Mike - what would be economies of producing generic USAF alphabets/serial no's in 32nd - the way Daco used to do in their sheets - that al least would be a start in giving us a toe in door - hopefully without bankrupting you guys!
  10. You'll need an F-18A of some description , Hasagawa I guess, but basically any A model hornet would do
  11. Simple - its a modern jet in 1/32 - 3 strikes against it from the start .. believe me , building modern aircraft in 32nd can be a Very frustrating experience - its not just RAF subjects that suffer , superscale dropped 32nd scale subjects some time last year due to falling sales , here's hardly a massive selection of decals in 32nd modern subjects of any kind, I think the biggest selection is for F/A-18's - and apart from 2bob's the selection for these is drying up pretty quickly too...
  12. basket weaving anyone .. maybe cross stitch , or perhaps knitting - I sure won't be model making , after looking at that masterpiece! My goodness what a brilliant effort - one of those models that really pushes the state of the art ....
  13. Yup that's how I remember her .. Oh well , let the moaning begin .. , personally , having built the 1/32 SBD that took at kicking on Hyperscale over recessed vs Raised rivets , I really couldn't care - The DC-3 looks to be a beautiful kit , and who knows I may end up investing in it , when it finally surfaces in what a couple of years - based on Trumpeters release record!
  14. Isn't there one tiny little problem - with what looks to a fabulous model - On the DC-3/C-47 family - weren't the rivets raised?
  15. Some of you might have seen this e-mail from Meteor over the weekend - for those that didn't - I quote "But First, Here Are The BIG Projects We ALREADY intend to release BEFORE Christmas" . . . Regardless of the results of the survey mentioned later in this email. These sets will be: 1/32 FG.1/FGR.2 (F-4K/F-4M) Massive Conversion for the Tamiya F-4, INCLUDING decals for NINE different RAF/RN schemes. This is Wild Hare bottom'n set WHA32001. The decals alone include six HUGE sheets, and we'll also make the two 8.5" x 11" sheets that comprise the famous "Alcock and Brown" scheme available separately (no, the CAM sheet will not fit our model). Stay tuned for MUCH more information about this massive set in the near future. 1/32 F4H-1 Phantom Massive Conversion for the Tamiya F-4, INCLUDING decals for SIXTEEN different early Phantom schemes contained on two HUGE 8.5" x 11" decal sheets. The set also includes two 8.5" x 11" sheets of BlackMagic™ Precut Painting Masks for the elaborate chevrons and swooshes, etc., on some of these schemes. This really is a massive conversion; so stay tuned for much more information about it in the very near future." Ok who's ready to put their life savings down for this one ....? - well ok me for one - anyone else ? M guess on the price - based on past CE conversions of this size - what $250+ .. I'm praying the exchange rate stays at $2 to the pound!
