  1. Has anyone read “ The Fairey Battle: A Reassessment of it’s RAF Career.” By Greg Baughin? I have long been interested in the Battle and it’s tragic history during the Battle for France and the Battle of Britain. I will have to order it sight unseen on line as the chances of my local book store getting this title are pretty much non existent and I am hoping it is well written and readable. TIA John R.
  2. Thanks to all who replied to my post. I have forwarded them to my son. Britmodeller is a fantastic resource. John R
  3. Hi all: My son is interested in building a model of the Star Blazers Argo Space Cruiser Yamato and asked me if I knew anything about kits of this subject. I'm strictly an aircraft modeler and haven't a clue. The kit he found is the Bandai one, does anyone have any experience with this kit? What level of experience is it and how easy a build is it? Are there better kits of this subject? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated. TIA John R.
  4. First time poster on an armor site. I am currently building the Airfix 1/48th Albion Refueller. What a lovely kit it is as was their Bedford MWD which I just finished as an early war RAF vehicle. I have a question on the seats in the cab. Are these leather or canvas seats and if leather just what color would they be? It has been suggested by friends that they are either coach green leather like those found in the Lancaster Bomber or and this I find hard to believe red! Many thanks in advance for any and all help. If anyone connected with Airfix should read this post here is hoping that the Albion and Bedford are just the beginning of a series of 1/48th scale WW2 airfield vehicles!
  5. Thanks to all the replies. To give a touch of color I think I'll go with the light aluminum.
  6. I am finishing the Airfix 1/48th RAF Ground support set and have a question about the two metal cases that come with it. Was there a regulation color in WW2 for items like these? I know from my time in the US Army that most metal boxes/cans were O.D. TIA
  7. Many thanks for the recommendation. I will order it tonight. I can't believe I mispelled Stirling . I am hoping that Airfix will do a new tool Stirling in the near future as well as a new Halifax I seldom build in 1/72nd but I doubt we will be seeing a 1/48th Stirling anytime soon. John R
  8. Hi All: Has anyone read the new work on the "Short Stirling" by Pino Lombardi? I am a fan of the Stirling and would like to add a good book on it to my reference library. I don't mind paying for good works but this title isn't being given away at my regular on line book seller. If it is even close to Robert Kirby's fantastic Avro Manchester or K.A. Merrick's equally good Halifax: From Hell to Victory and Beyond I will order it with confidence that I am getting a good buy. TIA John R. Thanks for the heads up on mispelling Stirling can't imagine what I was thinking.
  9. Many thanks for the quick responses. Black it will be. I guess the watch word should always be Beware of details on export aircraft.
  10. Hi All: working on the Roden Gladiator Mk.I (1/48th) but am having a bit of confusion over what color the instrument panel would be. I am using the True Detail cockpit set and the color call out is for a wood color, medium brown?, panel. A Goggle search showed a Mk.I in Sweden that is supposedly unchanged from when it was flown in the war also has a wooden panel. However several other currently flying Gladiators have black panels. I suspect that the Mk.II instrument panels were definitely black. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
  11. Many thanks for the quick responses. That is one beautiful 109! The Light Compass Grey looks like a very close (close enough) match for RLM77. Hopefully my LHS will have it in stock the next time I am in.
  12. Hi All, Looking through the profiles of FW190D9s in Jerry Crandall's two volume set on the FW190D9s and I was struck at how many of the camouflage schemes used RLM77 Grey especially on the wings. This rasies the question of who makes a good match for this colour in their line of paints. I tend to use enamels but acrylic paints are also so doable. Any thoughts on this welcomed.
  13. I hope the good folks at Airfix will give serious thought to each and every suggestion members have made. As for myself here are my wished for subjects: 1/72nd scale, All new tool Short Serling. An accurate early mark Halifax. Hampton, LB30 and Whitley. 1/48th scale: Blenheim Mk. 1/1F & IV/IVF. Defiant Mk. I. Hudson. Do-17Z/215 nigft fighters and last but not least an accurate P40B/C. Well one can always hope! John R.
  14. Many thanks for the reply. I am coming to the conclusion that there is no firm answer to this question. Some do and some don't seems to sum things up. The area in question is extremely shy when it comes to being photograph as well as being difficult to see clearly. I did notice that those a/c with these markings seem to have a much thinner width frame lines than those in almost all of the decal sheets I have seen. Hopefully someone will add more to this thread.
  15. On the upper wings above the radiators either side of the fuselage and near the leading edge, one sees red warning lines in the shape of a rectangle with two diagonals. How commom were these markings? I have been looking through all my references but can only find three photos that clearly show these markings. A very early PR Mosquito, a post war Turkish a/c and a Swedish a/c. The Data File on the Mosquito shows the shape and make up of this stencil but none of the illustrations show this applied on operational a/c. Even the Ducumus Camouflage book on the Mosquito doesn't show them. I have one color photo of a number of assembled wings waiting to be joined to fuselages that have national markings but definitely nothing over the radiators. I find this a bit odd as wing walk area markings are clearly found on most other RAF a/c. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Yellow3
