  1. May I ask a couple of additional questions relating to captured RAF airframes? 1 - Would the aircraft retain their guns after capture? 2 - Were any Fw 190D's operated by the RAF's Enemy Aircraft Flight? With regard to the 190D's, I cannot find any record of RAF D's in War Prizes but there is a picture which shows the nose of a long nosed Fw but no mention of which Mk. in the accompanying text although I guess it could be a Ta 152!
  2. Stupid question time! Would the airframe stencilling be the same as applied to USAAF aircraft or would the stencilling be applied in the UK, prior to releasing to the appropriate Squadron? Thanks
  3. Single engined, metal skinned, it's got to be a Supermarine Walrus?
  4. Well what can I say apart from and no pizza in sight anywhere I trust that this will be given pride of place, on your shelf, it deserves as much! As for your WIP, thoroughly enjoyable and you make it look so simple that even this plastic assembler could master a few of your tricks of the trade! Come on, what's next?
  5. Wasn't there some thought that Ilyushin was first but due to falling out of favour or due Soviet politics, the honour went to Gagarin, who launched (possibly) a week later, only for him to also fall from favour, due to his popularity? Although that could be a conspiracy theory of course!
  6. Edgar, When the airframe was being built, would the manufacturer install everything then paint the cockpit or would things like the control column for example, be painted prior to installation? Obviously I'm not talking about the black control boxes, just those items that would be painted with the appropriate internal colour! Hope that makes sense and apologies for hijacking the thread.
  7. Thanks Troy, I've just checked Amazon and it's about £15.00 posted so have ordered a copy. As for extras well... Aeroclub Tail Wheel Aires Wheel Well Aires Control Surfaces Aires Mk.22 Engine CMK Cockpit Quickboost 40mm Cannon Barrels Quickboost Exhausts SAC Landing Gear True Detail 4 Spoke Main Wheels just on the look out for a kitchen sink now! Initial thoughts are that with the wheel well in place, the rear of the engine may need to be, urrmm... altered, so that everything will fit but I'm thinking that any changes would be hidden by the Fuel Cell, fingers crossed!
  8. I've bitten the bullet and have started to cut the engine cowlings away (gulp) but the second round of questions didn't take too long to appear in my head! 1 - I've tried to google the Vokes filter but cannot find anything that appears to help me so can anyone point me in the direction of an image of a Hurricane fitted with the Vokes Filter but without the lower cowling in place? I assuming that the filter wasn't attached to the lower cowling but could equally by totally wrong! 2. Would a SEAC Hurricane have a covered hub wheel or exposed 4 spoke wheels? Many thanks again. Tony
  9. Thanks Troy, have saved for referencing! Hmmm, it's on my desk at the moment and it would appear that I wont be opening all the removable panels as I was hoping, I guess I will leave that to one of the Airfix/Trumpeter 1/24 kits! If I can figure out a way of removing the top 2 covers and the front engine cowling, with out it all falling to pieces, then I will be fitting the engine but its all up in the air at the moment! At least I have the Hawker Hurricane Inside & Out book as a good reference! Cheers
  10. Thanks Graham much appreciated
  11. Hi there, I'm about to start building Hasegawa's 1/48 Hurricane Mk.IId and wonder if anybody is able to clarify a few points first. I would like to finish it in SEAC colours, fitted with the Vickers S guns but would the Mk.IId also have an armoured radiator fitted or was this used on the Mk.IV only? Being a Mk.IId with the Vickers S cannon, would .303 Browning's be installed as well? I am considering exposing the engine and fuel tank bays up to the Instrument panel and if I understand correctly, the Hurricane Mk.II was fitted with a Merlin Mk.XX engine. Now I have a Aires Merlin Mk.22 (4099) available and being unsure of the differences, could I get away with using the Mk.22 in place of the Mk.XX, or am I barking up the wrong tree completely? I'm sure that there will be further questions as I start the build but in the meantime, thank you for any answers to the above questions!
  12. Thanks for the information, I'll update my indexes!
  13. Answered my own query, not Ultracast produced but Vector. Came through on the last Ultracast newsletter.
  14. Isn't there a set of replacement cowlings also available? As for the postage, I recently ordered from Ultracast and had to pay CAD9.95/£6.40 for 3 items! As a comparison, to send a similar package to Canada from the UK would cost between £4.26 to £9.56, depending on the service used although any order over CAD100.00, would be sent Post Free!
  15. Your comments are all appreciated, I currently close to finishing the CA Vampire NF.10 and have a 1/72 Trumpeter Sea Fury and 1/48 Tamiya Mustang also on the go! Many thanks,
  16. Hi Mark, Thanks for the reply and apologies for not having thanked you earlier! Anyway, next question relates to the gun sight, which model sight was fitted to Mustang IV's? I know I might be pushing it a bit with the help requests but an image or drawing would also be gratefully accepted. Thanks
  17. Thanks everyone, all the comments are gratefully received and I'm now blushing! No need to apologise, I knew that there were some differences between to Mks but I was unable to find any firm pictures of the few aircraft operated by the FAA so used artistic license! I have all the issues from No.1 until Vol 8 Iss 12 then restarted with Vol 10 Iss 4, when the modelling content was reintroduced and searched my indexes but didn't find anything, do you know which particular issue you article appeared, as I may build another in 1/48! Externally I used Xtracolor X5/EDSG, X25? Dark Slate Grey and X7/Sky) and I used Humbrol (117, I think) for the interior. A coat of Klear then finished with Xtracrylix Flat Varnish. Thanks John, I'll use that on my next build! I'm thinking of leaping into the deep end and may make Eduards' 1/48 Bristol F2.b my next mule! Thanks for the comment Steve and as for the prop, very unscientific I'm afraid! I took a Hurricane (Revell Mk.IIc) prop from my Spares box and just rounded the hub down! I'm not sure if its totally accurate but it looks OK to my eye!
  18. Hi all, Have recently finished these two. Academy Helldiver, finished in the markings of 1820 Squadron, FAA. Internal detail Predominantly Eduard BigEd set with minor details also added! External detail 1820 Squadron insignia was hand painted and the rear twin guns rebuilt from scratch using Master .303 barrels. The kit itself, is a little gem with nice recessed panel lines and even the canopies are nice and thin! Next is the test mule! Since Wingnut Wings came on the scene, I have wanted to build one but could never really get my head around the building process and rigging. However, as I had a Roden Gladiator available, I commenced the build about 18 months ago but kept putting it to one side, the closer I got to the rigging and fitting the upper wing. Then Pheon released some rather nice decals to suit, which I picked up at Telford and have now completed the build. It looks OK from distance but doesn't stand up to close inspection but while I'm not completely happy about the fitting of the upper wing, I no longer fear rigging and will build another test mule soon, to try and refine my skills before commencing on any Wingnut Wings kits. Internal detail All internal bits are either Eduard or scratch built External details The kit is not too bad with only a few sink marks though with my (extremely) limited knowledge of biplanes, the kits' wing support struts are not that strong and could do with being replaced. Is it happened, the inner struts looked really feeble and incapable of supporting the weight of the upper wing, so I scratch built replacements from plastic rod and glued them in place. I glued these in place prior to fitting the top wing but Mr S Law regularly putting an appearance in, I kept knocking them off and right at the end, after painting and rigging the model, I decided to replace them again with brass but being unable to match the ends to the wing/fuselage location points, they only fit where they touch. To get some tonal differences with the paintwork, I used Humbrol Metal Matt Aluminium (27001) for the wing and tail surfaces, Mr Metal Alumine for the rear fuselage and Mr Metal Chrome Silver for the metal cowlings plus Pheon decals for the markings and stencils. Regretfully, I didn't manage to achieve a scratch free surface and this stands out in some areas, due to the paint scheme! Anyway, thanks for looking and as always, criticisms are welcome!
  19. ...or how many times have 'I' done that?
  20. Thanks for all the guidance so far and if I may indulge in the services again... 1 - Would I be right in saying that a Q type Sutton harness would be fitted to a Mk.IV at the time it was operating? 2 - Would the pilots seat be as supplied by the manufacturer or would a seat similar to the Hurricane/Spitfire/Tempest etc, be installed? Many thanks,
  21. Would it be possible to use your "favourite material" for the exhausts as per the leather collar you fitted around the cockpit entry in post 167? Also just wanted to say that I would be happy to have such a model on display in my cabinet! Unfortunately though, everything I have is too small
  22. Can O' Worms time as I have another "what colour" questions now! As mentioned, I'm building a Dallas built, RAF camouflaged Mustang Mk.IV, operated during 1945 and having spent the last couple of hours trawling the BM search facility and google, I have decided to ask rather than risk getting further confused. Therefore, can anyone offer advice on the colours used for the following internal areas! Cockpit - Should I be safe using US interior green with a black floor (I think that unpainted floors were only Post-War)? Gun Bays - Zinc Chromate with a "yellow bias", Zinc Chromate with a "green bias or US interior green? Can I assume that the interior faces of the gun bay doors/covers would be painted the same colour as the rest of the gun bay! Main landing gear well - Zinc Chromate with a "yellow bias", Zinc Chromate with a "green bias", light gray to match the underside airframe colour or even aluminium? Tail wheel well - Zinc Chromate 'yellow', Zinc Chromate 'green' or 'light gray'? Wheel Well doors - Should the internal faces to be painted aluminium or as per the lower camouflage colour? I also seem to remember reading that where the main wing spar was visible within the main wheel well, this was a different colour as well! Is that correct and if so what colour should be used for the wing spar? I understand that Zinc Chromate is not a paint but a chemical application hence my reasoning for using the word 'bias' when trying to express myself but only have a limited vocabulary Many thanks as always for any information presented.
  23. Thanks for the guidance, I wasn't sure if smooth tyres would have been fitted as part of the equipment changes required for RAF use!
