AFV Club 1/35 M113A1 - Finished
Jeff Leiby replied to snapper_city's topic in Work in Progress - Armour
Looking good. Just a couple comments based on my experience manning M113-family vehicles. The U-shaped ridge around the rear ramp opening and the "bar" across the top of the rear opening are rubber gaskets and should be painted flat black. Looks like you might still be able to paint the gaskets. AFV Club added the oval plate on the roof at the driver-side rear corner. This plate was not on production M113A1s. It was found only on Pilot #3 so the oval engraving should be filled and the bolts sanded off. For your build, you could cover it with stowage...plenty of photos show stowage at that location. Sorry that I did not see your build earlier, but you have an excellent build underway. I highly recommend David Dolye's two books on the M113, "M113 APC in Vietnam," and "M113 Armored Personnel Carrier Walk Around." AFV left a lot of interior items out of the kit and the biggest mistake is not including engine grill mesh in the provided PE set. Eduard already has a new PE set for this kit on the market. Mark, again a great build, especially like the aluminum undercoat for the interior. Look forward to more of your work. . -
Jeff Leiby started following Veeday 1/72 Flycatcher
-
I have the 1/72 Veeday "Double Kit", kit Nos. O12/O13, of the Gloster Gamecock and Fairey Flycatcher. The fuselages and appear to be correct, but the fabric on the Flycatcher fuselage is overstated. I thought the Flycatcher is a small airplane, but the gamecock is even smaller!

The first M-1s were issued to the 3rd Infantry Division in West Germany in 1983. At that time NATO was in process of designing a common camouflage pattern, resulting in the current green/brown/black patterns. Since the designs had not been finalized in 1983, the first M-1s were issued in NATO green. By tthe time that the M-1A1 was issued the new camo pattern had been finalized and the tanks came from the factory in NATO camo except for those issued to the 24th Infantry Division/renamed as 3rd Infantry Division which came from factory in sand paint. So the NATO three color pattern would be correct of you don't want desert camo. Jeff

VEB Tupolev TU-114 Aeroflot

Outstanding! I purchased a number of VEB kits in East Berlin in the mid-80s, so I know and respect the work required to get your result. Congrats. -
American Civil War, Union Submarine Alligator 1/72
Jeff Leiby replied to whitestar12chris's topic in Historic Vessels to 1914
I look forward to this build. I have the Hunley kit and want to see how the Alligator kit compares. -
Matchbox, along with Monogram and Airfix were the only source for injected plastic kits of 'tween wars' kits. Matchbox, at the time, produced the only kit of the US Army Air Corps P-12E in any scale, of which I have a half dozen. Also in my stash are: Siskin IIIA, also a vacuform conversion for a Siskin trainer SBC-4, with resin fuselage for the SBC-3 Heyford Gladiator Fury He70, three on hand, one for each version that can be built Stranaer Walrus and modern CH-47D

Excellent build, love the restrained weathering. I have one recommendation concerning the IR headlights. They actually appear to be black with a red tint. Recommend you paint them either black or gloss black and when dry overcoat with clear red. Again, really like your M113A2.

Dazzle Ship Question...What's Available?
Jeff Leiby replied to fightersweep's topic in Maritime WWI to 1939
Steve, Below is good starting point for US Navy in WW2: http://www.shipcamouflage.com/warship_camouflage.htm Many different patterns that are different than the WW1 "dazzle" schemes. Jeff -
Great work! Like the weathering..shows a used aircraft without being excessive Jeff

The added armor plates under the drivers position appear to be "after market" added in Afghanistan and to be painted with red primer only and has started to rust. As is visible in your picture the bottom of the hull was originally painted a the factory with color worn off at the rear under the engine compartment. I would recommend a dark metallic color if you want exposed unpainted surface....pre-rust. Look at the blade of a used bulldozer for the dark bare metal, not the fresh shiny metal from recent use. Hope this helps. Jeff
-
What area do you consider unpainted? The underside of the hull is factory painted but does suffer heavy wear. Because of the constant wear, particularly in muddy terrain the rust is minimal as it is sanded off. Jeff

The German panzer troops which I observed wore the uniform as shown by Dan. My time references are REFORGER 78 and a tour from 1980-84. My battalion had a partnership unit the 543rd Panzer Battalion/ Territorial forces and they wore the solid green/OD coveralls. Jeff

Nigel, To clean the screen you might try a very fine paint brush dupped in appropriate thinner and slowly remove excess. Jeff
