  1. I built one and the bendy fuselage mouldings were a bit of an issue. But it was not hard to glue up straight and it's a wonderfully tactile shape.
  2. 1/24 David Brown 990 Implematic. Would look good next to the Heller Fergie.
  3. Looking at information from Airfix the prices look to be similar to Hannants’ listings for the Academy boxings. I don’t build much in 1/35 and when I do I look for British subjects, which means the Stuart. I wonder if this will be a one off, or will Airfix go into 1/35 with some British subjects? If foreign manufacturers think they can make money out of a Churchill or a Valentine then why not Airfix?
  4. I wonder where all those 1/35 armour kits have come from? Previous indications have been that it was not an area Airfix were going to develop, so this is a bit of a departure. I presume that these must be repackaged kits from another manufacturer which Airfix haven’t done for a while. Does anyone know their origin?
  5. I don’t recognise it as a tractor made in Britain.
  6. I’ve not done very well with group builds, but I’ve got loads of the buggers in my stash. Next year is ages away so maybe...
  7. Sharkmouths on Spitfires often look daft. I think that by going large the Aussies got it right, though they went through a few versions. This US aircraft falls into the comedy bracket, but it’s a worthy subject for all that. I’m looking forward to the finished product.
  8. I also like poking around old airfields. Here's RAF Culmhead's watch office
  9. There has been much research and a lot of debate on Malta colour schemes, but the best that can be said is that some are more likely than others. I would suggest looking at the various schemes that have been postulated, finding one you like and going for it.
  10. Well it’s nice to see Trumpyboss continuing with their apparent love affair with the FAA. It’s also comforting to see that they they are maintaining their reputation for making bizarre errors, thereby maintaining our expectations. But sarcasm aside, it will be interesting to see one of these being built. I have the Airfix kit, which pleased me immensely. There are comments that the detail in the Trumpeter kit is better, though this seems mainly to be in the inclusion of rivet divots alongside the panel lines. The intakes may be a little more accurate, as I remember doing remedial work on the Airfix kit. Another thing I remember from the Airfix kit is the fairing at either end of the tailplane. Airfix include it as part on the tailplane, which is moveable. Trumpeter have moulded the fairings into the fins, so the tailplane will have to be fixed in one position.
  11. I wonder if, as far as Trumpeter are concerned, near enough is good enough. They obviously don’t set out to make inaccurate kits, but errors are inevitable. Whereas other manufacturers may take time to correct these perhaps Trumpeter take the view that the priority is to get the kit out in the market and start paying for itself rather than spend time and money on what, to them, may be minor corrections. Even if the kit is heavily criticised there will still be enough sales to make a profit. In the meantime, the next kit is on its way.
  12. The deciding factor for me is likely to be price. Wonderland have the Trumpeter kit for £45. The Special Hobby kit is being offered on the internet for up to £10 less. I can put up with the oddities of a low volume product, so the decision is easy to make without having to think about accuracy.
  13. My preference is to look at pictures of the real thing, then make a decision on how much attention, if any, I want to bring to the panel lines. On the real thing sometimes panel lines are clearly visible and sometimes they are not, depending on surface wear, dirt, lighting and viewpoint. On a model, because Is is small and lighting is more likely to be controlled, accented panel lines will always be visible. Having said that, a model is a representation of its subject, not an exact replica, so there will always be some “artistic licence”.
  14. Great to see this kit being built as it brings back fond memories. As a boy I built a Mk II and Mk VI, which, together with an Airfix Typhoon, won a prize for me in a school competition.
  15. Or was it? I’ve just watched the programme and found it fascinating. It seems as though the official version of the reason for the raid (which captured my imagination as a child) has been questioned. Was the raid really to benefit the local Resistance, was it part of a wider plan to misdirect the Germans in the lead-up to D-Day or was to serve the shadowy purposes of MI6? Of course, whatever the reason for the raid there is no doubting it’s audacity or the bravery of those involved.
