  1. And just last week i pre ordered the MkIV... what do i do?
  2. Exceptional build... looks fantastic, well done.
  3. In need of a cheap compressor that works... if any exist. Why cheap? Well it's not going to get that much use... so don't want to be spending a fortune on one for it to sit in a box for weeks at a time. What's my price? No idea... obviously not a £10 item but also not £80... somewhere in the middle would be nice if possible.
  4. Hello all... it's been a while, family life... you know how it is. I've since glued the body together... which was straight forward. As for the paint job... that's been terrible. I was going for the camoflauge scheme but after the first paint went on i didn't like it... the two colours were just too different so i cleaned it up and repainted using 1 different colour of green to what's listed... but i still wasn't happy so once again stripped it back down. I then thought that i've done a fair few camoflauge schemes in my time so thought i would now go with the plain paint scheme. I thought it would be simple enough but after mixing the required paints and painting... once again i wasn't happy with the colour... i then tried two other times but i'm just not happy with the colour. So that's what i've done since my last visit and it's sat in the box for a while while i try and figure how to paint it... plus i need some accessories. As usual... pics to follow tomorrow of the condition of it.
  5. Just a few little bits done today. First thing to be done was to paint the interior of the fuselage... while doing that i decided to paint inside the wheel bays. And this is where i had two problems which hopefully i can overcome... 1- when spraying, even though i masked up, i still managed to get over spray everywhere... so need to be more careful or practice a lot more. 2- i'm a messy person... as you can see from the paint smudge marks.... need to wear gloves when handling paints or be more careful. After that i then started on the finer details of the cockpit.... and i had yet more problems... trying to paint things so small my hands shake like i'm a nervous wreck so i painted them, smudged a little then repainted and repeated this a few times. Also i need a much finer brush than what i have and thinning down just a touch probably would of helped. Please excuse the photo... i don't have a macro lens for closer shots. Tomorrows work will be to start assembly of the fuselage to wings.
  6. Those few details really do make a big difference. I haven't had a look at the canopy just yet but if it can be fitted after assembly then i'll look at copying the detail in the photo. Thanks
  7. I wasn't planning too... not with this model at least. My aim is to build a really good Lancaster bomber but i haven't done models for some time so this and a few others i shall be building beforehand are for practice in building, fixing issues, painting and wethering. The cockpit is really lacking so as i put it together... depending on how much you see i may change my mind.
  8. Yes i will be... they are painted and drying as i write this. Hopefully more work and more pics tomorrow evening.
  9. Today was a day for glueing up and painting a few small parts. Fitment of the left wing to fuselage was fine... but the middle section of wing to fuselage had an issue with the size of the tab, once trimmed the fitting is a little loose but it all lines up fine. Middle section of wing to left side of cockpit doesn't line up... again a little trimming of the tab is all that's needed. Same story with the right side of cockpit to right wing And this is all that you get for the cockpit.
  10. I'm Pretty certain the FW-189 will now be my next build now... thanks. I suppose i could of used a fret saw... i do have one with a fine blade... if i had only thought.
  11. Yes it's the Airfix kit... Just googled images to get a number off the box incase that meant anything and found this link... Release dates and box changes. From Wikipedia it states another plane was chosen over this and so it's very much unlikely that they flew again after testing.
  12. So it's been a week since i dug out my spray gun to paint a part non aircraft related... in that time i've fixed my old model, my eldest sons model, built a Spitfire with my other kids, started work on a Blohm & Voss BV141. Then tonight i see.......... planes for sale on the forum... so hoping to get them... seen a post about works.co.uk having offers on.... so bought some more had a quick look on the Airfix website to see what size models they do for possible future builds.... and pre-ordered two more (Bristol Blenheim MkIV Bomber and McDonnell Douglas FG.1 Phantom) for October and November... as well as begging them to make models of The Scottish Aviation Bulldog and Grob Tutor, two models that mean a lot to me. I'm blaming you lot... well those that have stockpiles for a rainy day.... that's going to be my excuse once SWMBO finds out.
  13. Me too... alot. Bought a few years ago in very rusted but working condition... used it a bit and went to two shows. Recently thought about selling it and just buying a small engine or a good condition Lister D... then i thought it would be better to just give it a new paint job. So it got taken apart a little, repainted and placed on a trolley that has also been restored.... almost finished then it can run my newly restored Lister domestic water pump.
  14. I use revell/humbrol enamels.... and humbrol thinner. I put in the jar what i think is the amount of paint i need then add thinners to get a watery mix that i think will spray fine... it's different every time sometimes it's fine other times too runny and then i waste even more paint adding more to get a good viscosity. I guess it's a matter of much spraying to work out an average... and as yet i've only just started model making again.
  15. Old kit... I don't know... how do i find out? Plenty of images on google yes... but not many detailed shots. It had a short life so i doubt there may be many.
  16. I picked up a random model to make and once you really look at it it's a funny old thing... makes me wonder why the person who designed it did so like that... it's also a shame that none exist today. The main fuselage and wings need no internal parts, although a little painting can be done around the wheel section i chose to do this after assembly. The first problem is the sprue attached to the fuselage is quiet thick and was hard to get off... when i finally did so it caused a little damage... thankfully i bought some filler today. Dry fitted they went well together, although one middle section of fuselage was bowed but when glued and taped this isn't a problem. Once glued the wings were test fitted to the body... with a little sanding to the tabs on the wings they should fit nice and snug.
  17. Very nice job... really like the RAF rescue helicopters.
  18. It looks like it was a clear sunny day so i would of shot at ISO 100 or 200 but if you're not printing very large then ISO 400 is fine... the only thing i would of changed is the focus you chose. Keeping a small focusing point on fast moving planes like these is extremely difficult so better to use multiple focus points... and put camera into burst mode to shoot a few frames a second to ensure at least one or two will be in focus. Was you hand held or on a monopod?
  19. Visiting my local model shop i was in need of a WW1/2 plane i could practice better building skills and weathering techniques on... with nothing specific in mind i randomly picked the first box up for £10 only briefly looking at the picture on the box. Back at home and having a good look i started to get crossed eyed... it's a funny old plane and one i've never heard or seen before. It's a Blohm and Voss BV141... Plane History Anybody heard/seen or know a good source for pictures?
  20. Thanks for all the lovely comments guys... they will be getting shown later. Thanks for the answers Black Knight... and thanks Troy Smith for the useful link. The kids are 9, 7, 5 and 4... 3 boys and the youngest a girl... my oldest boy 13 nearly also wants to build one, he built a quick build when he was around 8. I'm not a big multi tasker so trying to have 4 kids build one thing maybe wasn't the best way of doing things but they were happy and have asked to do another but their own one... so the plan is to take them to the local Model shop that i discovered and visited today (of course i bought myself another one) and they can pick their own. Due to the medical situation with the youngest girl, 4 going on 5, i'm not in employment... so having a fair bit of time on my hands i haven't chose to sit and do nothing. Instead the small bit of woodwork with pallets i used to do turned into building a 8"X8" workshed for woodworking with nice hardwoods and i also mess about with arc welding... then there's fixing the minibus of course. because of this the kids have always asked if they can do this or do that and i have only ever said one thing... YES... unless it's to do with the table saw or router table of course. So my kids although they still like having their heads in their ipads they are fairly hands on when it comes to making stuff... The youngest girl from the age of 3 would sit at the drill press and just make holes in wood. My boys 9 and 7 play with the scroll saw. My boy 5 could play all day with a few scraps of wood, hammer, nails and hot glue. And in the years i've let them do things for themselves there has thankfully only been one accident..... STOP READING NOW IF YOU'RE SQUEAMISH. ........................... ........................... ............................ ........................... ........................... ............................ The accident involved my eldest son when he was around 11/12. After watching a video by Peter Sellers in which he made a small wooden spinning propeller... we decided to have a go. It involves chiseling a piece of wood to a rough shape then using a spokeshave to finish the shaping. Naturally we had the relevant safety talk about using the tools we were going to use and the dangers that are present... sometime later we had made many items with various woods... I needed to step into the house for a minute and left him to it... but within that minute he made two stupid mistakes he knew he shouldn't of done and came running into the house covered in blood. For unknown reasons he decided to grab a larger chisel than what was needed and put the item he was working on in the vice straight up rather than pointing away from him... and so when he leaned over the piece and went to trim it with the chisel..... HERE COMES THE SQUEAMISH BIT... The chisel slipped off the work piece and came straight up at his face... hitting him straight in the nose. It was a severe cut and required an operation but he is fine. He knows what he did wrong he just doesn't know why he done it... but accidents happen we just have to learn from them... wether we're kids or adults. I myself had an accident with a jointer because i was too lazy to grab a push stick... yes you're thinking right... my fingers went into the blades.... but i never learnt as i've done it with a router too. Anyway i'm going on a bit now so i'm going to make a cup of tea and take a look at my new weird plane i've never seen or heard of before... more to come in another post.
  21. My kids showed an interest in making a plane after seeing my Heinkel 111... so this is their first attempt at one. There were a few problems with the kit... the fuselage didn't fit into the assembled wings so trying to trim fuselage to fit didn't go well and there are slight gaps And in building this it's also raised a few questions... which i will list at the end. First issue was the matt black paint wasn't drying matt. 2 1 Next problem was the canopy didn't fit 8 3 We used masking tape but some residue was left behind and trying to remove only messed up some of the paint work. 4 Also the decals on the side of fuselage seem to be a little too big and when placed as pictured in instructions... just didnt line up and are almost wrapping over the top of fuselage. 7 5 So as you can see it is a Spitfire and has all the right part it's just not the best job ever to be done, but with 4 kids all helping to build it... it wasn't likely to be perfect. The main thing is they enjoyed it and want to do more... who knows they could go on to be like the rest of us and enjoy models all through our adulthood. And now the problems... Masking... masking tape seem to be fine but after painting and leaving to dry left residue........ what would be a better product to use? Painting... Although we spray painted it there is a clear ridge between the two colours used....... what can be done to achieve a flat universal finish? Decals... they look like decals just placed on top and rubbish at that...... what's a good method of applying decals as to make them look more authentic?
