  1. Hello chaps, If you remember, I had replaced advantageously the Tamiya decals screws by GSW ones on my front fender (last May 19 post p. 8). I had tried to find more same screws in the jar where all my GSW micro screws are stored, but I could find only 2 ones among the probably 1000 screws. I wanted to order another set on the GSW site but pity, they remain out of stock from May up to now. I supposed I could find some other same screws if I decided to patiently sort all the micro screws and I was right: I could find 17 screws, what should be largely sufficient at least for this first bike, especially if you consider that some screws will not be in place, logically: Of course, I should have done all these corrections before painting my upper cowl. As usual, I was too much of a hurry and I realized too late. If necessary, I will remove all the paint and redo the whole painting job on this upper cowl... Cheers, O
  2. Waooh, again a great pic, gamblor, thanks a lot! It brings interesting infos: Notice that this carbon has a tiny pattern, that is why it is visible only on this close-up. Considering the 1/12 scale of the build, the question to represent it or not may is pertinent. If it is decided to represent it is taken, the 1/48 scale carbon fiber plain weave (Scale Motorsport) is a good choice, as its pattern is tiny. Personally, I have not taken such a decision up to now but I don't exclude to apply portions of this decal on the Black lower area of my upper cowl. About this A12 part, it seems to be quite correct. The fact that Top Studio suggests only to modify it (see above my february 2 post p. 3) leads me to trust in this proposition, still without knowing if logically, it should be assembled on the uppercowl. In the doubt, I will assemble it. Yet, precisely, if I wanted to assemble it on the upper cowl, I had to remove the lower portion of the weave fabric, the thickness of the nylon being an obstacle to a fine assembly: Cheers, O Edit a bit later: I decided to apply the 1/48 carbon decal mentioned just above on the bottom part of A12 first, to see if it is worth it to apply it more widely. The great close-up gamblor brought leaded me to reconsider the option for another area: In a previous post (July 23, previous page), I said this area should be painted Anthracite Grey. I could decide finally to rather apply the 1/48 carbon decal, what will be a challenge considering the complex shape of this bottom rear cowl...On the other hand, applying the Anthracite coat without affecting neither the inside (Silver), neither the upper surfaces of this rear cowl, is not so easy too... I also went on with the fuel tank cover, that is now over: I personally used a brand new 3000 grit Tamiya sponge with care to get a smoother limit.
  3. It's logic indeed and it is so that they will be exposed in my little "scenario". That is why I will represent the inside of these side fairings quite simply, but though with the carbon kevlar. In this regard, thanks a lot for the link to the carbon kevlar decals on Spotmodel, the 1/20 SK decals look good, I could order them for the side fairings inside unless I use the painting option. On my side, I just got the Gravity Carbon fiber box set and I decided to apply a different option than painting to represent the weave fabric inside the upper cowl that is not plain. I will indeed use the intermediate grade (among the 3 grades of nylon nets provided) not as mask but as material itself, glueing it on the Yellow background. To do that, I first applied on the net a coat of Gravity Dark Surface Primer, then 2 coats of Dark carbon fiber basecoat (included in the set). Then I used a wide masking tape (50 mm Tesa) to create a pattern of the upper cowl inside: Then I used this pattern to cut in double sided tape (Pocher) and in the nylon net the shape of this inside. I could so assemble the Black nylon net inside the upper cowl, getting the desired weave fabric look, not plain: N.B: not only the net is too shiny, also the clear dst... But I am gonna need your help one more time: I have also been working on the logo: A posteriori, it appears that the decal is a bit too small (4,7 mm diameter). I will print it a little bigger (5,1 mm diameter). So, the "Chrome" ring will be narrower, closer from truth... Yesterday afternoon, Internet didn't work in my area, and I couldn't post the pic showing my upper cowl as mentioned in my previous post. Here it is: Well, things go slowly but quite surely. I hope this first Honda Repsol (the Pedrosa one) will be over in September, October at the latest. I got yesterday the kit for the Marquez one… I want to thank again all of you, especially the ones who gave me a hand and the ones who encouraged me by liking or writing nice words… I apologize for not taking the time to see other builds in the forum, but if I don't spend the few time I have to go on with my own build (and to share it with you in this thread), it will become so slow that I will give up. Cheers, O
  4. Hello chaps, A new update: The job on the outside part of the upper cowl is on the way, nearly over (pic this afternoon). I ever removed the wrong notches inside and applied the Yellow background. I will have to be patient as I should get the nylon fiber until about 10 days. If gamblor916, or anyone, could find me a pic showing the inside of the Honda Repsol side cowl, it would be absolutely great, of course... Cheers, O
  5. Thanks again a lot, Manu, for the explanation about the article (you are most likely right, it was referring to the shape rather than to the material), for the additive link and for the kind words. Just a precision: the stocking would not be convenient on the very concave surface I have to deal with inside the upper cowl. I have just ordered the Gravity carbon fiber box set, including 3 grades of 8 x 8 cm nylon mesh that should be much better imho. Other precision: on second thought, I will lighten a bit the XF-4 with X-2 and X-8... Cheers, O
  6. My friends, Considering the new docs and infos brought as well by gamblor as by Ghost69, and the comparison below, here is what I will do, first on the upper cowl, and probably on side cowls too (partially): For the Yellow Green, the XF-4 Tamiya will be used. To be followed...
  7. Well, my friends, I'm learning a lot with you two! Thanks so Manu for this link, which confirms that the bodywork was made of carbon fiber: I had found this HRC site while I was looking for pics and it contains indeed many great pics (none of the inside cowls, pity), with the major benefit to show the 2014 version (among others) and this for the 2 drivers, Marquez and Pedrosa. It is mainly these photos that I was referring to in my N.B of yesterday post, but I missed the bodywork chapter... Curious if so that the article you put previously in link suggested that the use of carbon for the fairing was experimental in 2017. I don't understand that. Do you?
  8. Thanks a lot gamblor916 for these great pics, even if they plunge me into the greatest perplexity! Unlike you, I am far from being a specialist in bikes, GP etc. Your pics suggest that, finally, it is very possible that the inside of the upper cowl was the same in 2014 than in 2018, while I have just removed the carbon decal and repainted Flat Black this inside!! More, you could find pics showing the inside of side cowls: I could find a carbon decal that could be more appropriate than the Tamiya one to represent this yellowish carbon kevlar: Of course, I could also use the painting option with the stocking (with lemon yellow instead of Gun Metal)... And the Honda Repsol bench, showing a mechanic in nearly the same position than mine, is also inspirating for my project:
  9. Thanks a lot Manu for your contribution, with this very instructive article talking about the evolution of aerodynamic cowls, of which we may draw interesting conclusions. Let's focus on what the article says and shows about Honda's approach: This paper, that mentions experimental use of carbon for the fairings (only the upper one or all fairings?) was written in 2017, while the RC213V I represent is the 2014 version. So, we may suppose that, in 2014, the fairings were not carbon. The pic shows an unpainted carbon upper cowl on this experimental later version. Now I realize that the close-up of my previous post showing the inside part of the upper cowl with a carbon pattern was relative to a later version (capture screen showing a 2018 version). I was so probably wrong relying on this video to apply carbon inside the upper cowl: N.B: removing this decal is a blessing in disguise since I couldn't avoid undesired folds... The question remains for the side cowls, for which Tamiya suggests to apply XF-1 too (Flat Black). Even if I would love to find a pic showing the inside of these side cowls, as I said above, in the doubt, I will trust on Tamiya's suggestion (Flat Black). Notice btw that each time a carbon had to be applied, Tamiya suggested X-18 and not XF-1. Thanks gamblor916 for this great pic that I will add to my library. You will see my personal conclusions above about the carbon, that mot likely was not current on the 2014 versions. We agree to say that the inside of the rear cowl is silver (heat shield) and I applied X-11 on the affected parts. But it shows a Satin Anthracite (I was about to apply Satin Black) on the lower part of the rear cowl, while the attaching rear camera is carbon: Cheers, O
  10. Hello chaps, I said above that my next step would be the decals, but I changed my mind, and decided to first paint the inside of the fairings, thinking that applying necessary masks over the latter would be risky. So: I am though not sure the Flat Black is correct, because I wonder if the side cowls are made of carbon or not. For the upper cowl, we ever saw above that it was certainly carbon, and anyway not Flat Black plain: The Flat black applied inside the upper cowl is so just a base. I could possibly apply carbon decals over... Cheers, O N.B: if any of you has pics or a reliable source of info about the side fairings (close-ups) to determine if they are carbon too, it would be great. I personally made researches on the Net, found very instructive new pics furthermore, but up to now, impossible for me to say what material (ABS, carbon or else) was used for these bikes. In the doubt, I will leave the Flat Black...
  11. I hope the Blue Stuff whites will be opaque enough (Pedrosa had the number 26). For the 93 of my further Marquez bike, if necessary, I will be able to double the decal as I will have it in triplicate.
  12. Hello my friends, A new little update with the Light Fluo Red: I am going to use the Gravity Gloss coat set GC-306 for this next step to come. The Fluo colors are particular, and Philippe Devos, in his article (TMM 141 french ed.) showed the problems he met applying the decals directly on the Tamiya Fluo Red, the latter rubbing off the White digits: Cheers, O Edit a few hours later:
  13. Thanks Colin, and welcome on the thread. As I am still waiting for the 0,3 mm cables, I decided to begin the painting job on the cowls (or rather to go on as the Surface Primer GC-303 and the Titanium White GC-102 were ever applied). Before applying the Fluo Orange GC-127, a delicate masking step is necessary. Tamiya provides masks to cut but I highly recommend to use the great RACING TORO masks, that are exactly the same but already (precisely) cut off, what allows to win a lot of time. Studying the pics to check the precise position of the masks gave me the opportunity to see the difference, in my pics, between 2014 version ones and later ones (I had not noticed it up to now): The beautiful Tamiya box-art, very accurate, was useful too for this masking step. N.B: I am very happy with the Gravity paints. If I had known and used their Wimbledon White (even if we may prefer the color of my mix), I would certainly have avoided the big problems of devil spots I got that contributed to discourage me with this build (what absolutely doesn' t mean I'm gonna give it up forever). Next step: Fluo Red after masking... Cheers, O
  14. Hello chaps, I was not totally happy with my first trials (even if ever much better than the Tamiya decal) because the gradient was missing. In fact, I have realized that it was an error to start with the Tamiya decal. I could find easily the logo (only left side, pity) on Internet. I just had to export it in Word and resize. For the right side, things were more difficult: I could use the flip function in the Photos app of my Mac but the inscription HONDA was returned too. I decided to print on photo paper the logo and, separately, the correct inscription, to glue the latter on the logo and to take a photo: Once printed on the custom decal at the right size (5 mm rather than 5,5 mm as I said wrongly above), the result is as good as for the left side: Cheers, O
  15. Thanks Ron, I ordered on this site and, the next day, Ali informed me that my 0,3 mm were arriving in my country. Both should arrive nearly in the same time. Not a problem, these wires will certainly be useful for later. As I am still waiting for them, I decided to focus on an important detail, before beginning the Orange Fluo job on the cowls: The same job was done for the opposite side decal: N.B: I will have so logo decals for my 2nd bike, ordered 2 days ago. I also ordered the Tamiya front fork detail set and the TD 23175 détail set that is a less detailed version than the one used this time. Cheers, O
  16. Hello chaps, I had to come-back to the wiring that was not over. In my June 28 post, I anticipated that connecting the 0,3 mm wires to the Top Studio connectors B would mean amazing moments to come. I may confirm it was a nice party... I am still waiting for the 0,3 mm wires from Aliexpress but I could get some as I said in the July 6 post, being so able to go on a bit further: Even though I think not many people will check the validity of these connections, I made a point realizing them as TS suggests to do it. It is thus a real forest of cables that intertwine on this little area between the handlebars and the dashboard: If the wiring is now over for the set of connectors A and B, there are still cables to connect, including these ones that I forgot: Cheers, O Edit the next day:
  17. Thank you Manu for these precisions. As Jochen said, nothing wrong with that, you can't be a master in all areas and the car build is totally stunning furthermore. I am fascinated to see that some guys achieve to get such a result for a face and it would be interesting to know the name of this figurine forum.
  18. Impressive! You are a pro of modelling, definitely. I wish I could model like you do.
  19. Indeed Manu, you never wrote that, I may confirm as I followed with great interest your amazing 1/6 Fiat 806 build. But as you didn't precise that you bought it, and as it is incredibly realistic, we wondered how you could have got it. I just may hope my Kitano will be as realistic than your Bordino. The misunderstanding is cleared up. Have a nice evening too Cheers, O
  20. Great boots and helmet! Where did you find the boots? Sorry Ghost69 if we could suppose wrongly that you had bought a prepainted head (like I just did) for your figure (it wouldn't be a shame...) Would you kindly share with us the way you could get such an incredibly natural face for the latter? Cheers, O
  21. Indeed, Ron, I look forward to see if both seem to be at the same scale. Like you, I had been totally amazed when Manu had shown the head of his Pietro Bordino (the Fiat 806 driver). If, like Ron seemed to suggest, it is a prepainted face like the one I just ordered, then we're dealing with real artists. Btw, if I decided to order the prepainted version, it is because for now, my skills don't allow me to get such a result. Sometimes, you must be able to delegate... Anyway, thanks to all for your interest to my project. Cheers, O
  22. Hello chaps, Sorry if my build (already very slow) is delayed by the crazier and crazier project that sprouted in my head, but I'm now focused on the characters that could take place in my "diorama" (if I may use this term). Why "characterS"? Just because I wonder now if I could not add, in addition to my mechanic, the Repsol driver Marc Marquez. Indeed, while researching the Net for the mechanic, I found several 1/12 Minichamps figures. Pity, among the latter, no figure of Marquez but an interesting one of Valentino Rossi testing his bike for the 2010 GP: I also found Casey Stoner figures, but the head is not helmeted and, anyway, the suit is also different from Marquez one... I decide to order this Rossi figure. Now about the mechanic, the ebay seller replied quickly to my questions: Remains the question of my mechanic size. I will quickly build the Tamiya driver (see above), not to use it but to make measures and have an idea of the over scale mentioned by Ron. Ron that I thank warmly for his very useful contribution... Cheers, O Edit a bit later: Well, Ron, this figure doesn't seem to be so over scale. On the other hand, the head of these figures (as well the driver than the mechanic) is very big, even taken in account that Tamiya gave them a pretty thick hair (these figures were created in the 70's 😉). I measure approximately a head size of 74 mm. Even keeping only 64 mm to take in consideration the thick hairs, 64 x 12 = 77 cm head size!! (I don't have a big head but for me, it's 59 cm). Now as I will change the head for Kitano's one, this won't be a problem... Edit even a bit later: The Kitano head and the Rossi figure are both ordered. I may come-back to my build for now...
  23. You are very welcome, my friend, and thanks for the recommendations. I also like cinema… Cheers, O
  24. Dear Ron, I must say I had not noticed that my mechanic figure was over scale but you are certainly right, what is obviously a big problem for me, especially since you take in account that Japanese people are generally not big and tall. OK, his crouching position mitigates a bit the impact, but the problem remains for me... Oh, funny, I was writing these words when I got your last reply, that reassures me a bit. About the prepainted question, the seller of Takeshi 3D head proposes this option. I will contact him about that. Thanks slippers for your kind and encouraging words about my project. To be honest, I had heard about Takeshi Kitano but I am not sure I saw one of his movies. I was just happy to find a Japanese face for my figure... Cheers, O
  25. Thanks a lot Ron for this suggestion. I found this in ebay: It is a portrait of Takeshi Kitano, a Japanese filmmaker. It could become a Honda mechanic at my behest 😉! Cheers, O
