  1. Well sanded back, re primed & top coated so I will call the wing join done. Here with the Bison I have been building. Seems an era appropriate tanker The airbrush started messing about just before I start thinking about getting a top coat on. Have a look at these two for different paint finishes. I guess I am aiming nearer the one nearest the camera. But the far one….
  2. This looks like a whole page of wing joint work! Sanded back, primed to check the finish & then refilled. But I am rather hoping this is the last big fill & sand job on this build if this comes out ok I will touch up the primer & spray in the matching dark grey before thinking about the overall top coat. Need to paint & finish off the main undercarriage and find the wheel bay doors too
  3. How come this thread started in 2017 and I have only just found it? What’s not to love about a big Lanc (apart from acres of rivets)? I keep passing a sly glance at the Tamiya Lanc kit and thinking of all the airshows I have seen the BBMF at. Usually in her City of Lincoln 1980s schemes. Would look good next to my Shack when that is finished
  4. Back to the fill / sand / repeat loop until the wing roots are tidy. First pass looks ok, have now gone on with the green stuff
  5. The colour looks do different indoors and outside! Don’t worry about the nacelles - held in with part model glue, part super glue, part miliput, etc. they aren’t moving anywhere
  6. Filler on the wing joins And the ‘I was inverted’ view I will leave it over night & sand. It’s going to need more work but they are looking better & stronger
  7. Finally attached the wings. Fit despite being built up by me is not great so I have packed in some plasticard strip. I will leave it to dry & firm up before putting in some heavy filler
  8. Got the paint today. Should work ok, it’s actual a model rail LNER garter blue, but mixed around 3/4 grey to 1/4 blue could work. I need to do some test samples to see. Interestingly I got the Shack out in daylight and the current grey looks so different Anyway the next move is attaching the wings, sorting any gaps & filling, then get the next coat of slightly bluer paint on.
  9. Well the old grey lady is very grey with an all over coat of Humbrol 123 I think the canopy frame is fading into the airframe better with matching paint. Next paint isn’t likely to be here until next week though
  10. I have gone for some Humbrol 404 to mix with the 123 and see how that looks. I don’t think they were many about that hadn’t faded somewhat by the end of their flying days. I guess this is about the aim though
  11. I think so. It’s pretty dark despite a lot of information that the Humbrol colour is spot on. It will go on for a base coat & see from there
  12. I tried out the Humbrol paint tonight. I could do with getting the thinning consistent, although it’s good to leave it a little mottled. It’s dark alright. Not getting the blueyness but haven’t seen it in daylight yet I think I will get the canopy framing painted and then get the wings on then finish off the first full pass
  13. It’s not like they are even straight forward! I know this is an MR3 but the AEW was the same. Guess this is the Duxford one moving in for a refurb now the Victor is done
  14. Yep. That’s two pointless undercarriage parts, a nose wheel hub for an MR3, the exhausts and the prop blades The first one may be ok, could be in trouble by the end!
  15. Cheers. Yes, body & wings are not far off now. Those 24 individual white metal prop blades though……
  16. I was looking at the Shack this morning and decided it’s making decent progress. Bit to tidy around the main screen and the I think maybe some paint with the new Humbrol paint. To go with the Shack I have put together a white metal Sherpa and am working on converting a Corgi diecast Leyland Ergo to a Bison. And I have a new Houchin from Videoaviation to put together. All around the right period to pose them together
  17. Yes I am! There can’t be too many 1/48 Shackleton builds out there at the moment. I haven’t seen too many built ones either. I put my WIP on here usually & then put some things on FB
  18. Bit of Shackleton action from the 1990 Mildenhall show. And a brief appearance of the BBMF Lanc too. I remember those shows well, although I suspect I missed 1990 as I was at University at the time up north. I remember seeing one at Duxford to, maybe late 70s
  19. As well as the KC-135s there are the EC-135s, and how about the IL-76 transports? C-5s too
  20. Cheers @Karearea. Colour is always a tricky thing - try doing Euro One Us scheme. Every picture & every model seems different depending on light, shadow, age & photo development etc. Shack pics are much the same. A lot of indoor preserved shots plus the very shiny Pima one. 1970s / 80s / 90s pictures vary on what film was used. If I have any from my old 110 pocket picture I wouldn’t trust the colour! Your build is really looking the part there. The phrase that always comes to mind is the old grey lady! I wish I had that amount of surface detail (dropped elevators, open bomb bay etc) but I think that would become a never ending build
  21. Anyone mentioned India’s Jaguars yet? Private Jet Provosts / Strikemasters and Gnats are still about but probably not on any military registers now. How old are the Mirage based Cheetahs now, if they are still flying?
  22. I have been looking at the top walkway for the Bison. Mostly this has been based on pictures of the ASAM kit, which doesn’t necessarily agree with real pictures. Not that there are many pictures of a Bison from above. The basics seem to be that there are 4 circular lid on the top of the tank. Two see, to have hatches on them and a third has a lump (vent / depth check hatch?) on it. On the real thing the lids sit below the walk way with cut outs over them. On the ASAM model they sit on top. Also, on the real thing the walkway sits low behind the pump & hose unit. On the ASAM it sits above http://www.asam.co.uk/im22/sm175a.jpg So the easier option is to go for on top. I have found some round screw head covers that might work Then scratch the actual hatch bits on top. Should work
  23. Another arrival today to add to the dioramas. When I first built the HAS it was for RAF jets and they one thing I needed was ground power. A Houchin. I couldn’t afford a kit so I made one out of scrap wood and plastic. It’s been doing a job in the background of my builds for years. It’s hiding at the back of this shot as usual At Christmas I finally got around to getting a new one. I have been looking at the Video Aviation ones for ages. They always look good but are made in Italy and the cost of the postage is about the same as the cost of the kit. I hit the order button just after new year & it arrived today Contents are part resin part 3D print There is part of me that is a bit tempted to cast a copy from it before making it! It will be nice to have a decent Houchin, rather than the one or two US GPUs I have to go with the US jets.
  24. Glad to hear it looked right @alhenderson! That wing underside had a coat of Vallejo dark sea grey over exhaust pre shaded areas. It’s really not very dark! Hopefully the Humbrol paint will spray ok
