    Tackling the conspicuous shortcomings really paid off - the best Opel GT I have seen so far.

  3. Hi, If you ask people for the Italian car today the answer will be very likely Ferrari or Lamborghini. In the sixties or earlier, however, the answer would have been completely different. At least up to the beginning seventies Ferraris and Lamborghinis were so expensive and so unreliable that they were (at least in Europe) toys for a few super-rich enthusiasts completely unfit for more than occasional fun rides. Maseratis were much more durable and reliable but on the same high price level. The Italian marque of those days was Alfa Romeo. Today it is hard to believe that Alfa Romeo built an incredible number of highly desirable and sometimes even breathtaking cars. The steep decline of Alfa Romeo around 1970 was caused by poor quality, incompetent managements, the interference of the Italian government and finally the takeover by Fiat. One of the most attractive post-war Alfas was the Giulietta/Giulia Spider. Introduced in 1955 as the 1.3 litre Giulietta it was renamed in 1962 as the 1.6 litre Giulia. With a curb weight of less than 900 kg and up to 112 hp it was a fast car with excellent roadholding. I built my model from a Protar kit. Probably the same kit was sold by ROG some years later. My memories of the build are very vague. I suppose I built the kit about 15 years ago. I don't remember major issues (opposite to a disastrous Protar kit of the Mercedes W196 GP). Anyway with some minor improvements the kit made a nice model of a very attractive 1:1 car.

    I may be wrong, but I think this kit was released in the mid-sixties. If this is true it would explain the shortcomings of the kit. Particularly considering the issues the result looks perfect.

    Nice result, beautiful colour choice! Did you ever try Bare Metal Foil for the chrome trim? It is easy to use and the effect is stunning.

  8. Ferrari 308 GTB, Monogram, 1/24

    One of the last really attractive Ferraris! Beautiful colour, looks better than my red model. As you said: excellent body shell, very nice interior, but rudimentary chassis and very crude wheels. BTW Monogram's kit replicates the U.S. version of the 308 GTB: more ventilation slots on the rear deck lid and a box-like fairing (for the muffler?) below the rear bumper.

For those not familiar with the old Aurora kits it might be interesting that besides the DB4 shown above there were at least five more kits of European sports cars. Maserati 3500 GT: similar quality as the DB4, i. e. a usable kit that reqires some work; reissued by Monogram Porsche 904: quality supposedly slightly poorer (?); reissued by Monogram Jaguar E-Type OTS, Jaguar E-Type FHC, Ferrari GTO: ill-proportioned, therefore not recommendable; to my knowledge only FHC & GTO reissued by Monogram

  11. Hi, Considering that this Aurora kit is almost 50 years old it is not that poor IMO. Since I built the Monogram reissue more than 20 years ago my memories have more or less faded but I still remember three major problems: In those early days kits with opening doors, bonnets and even boot lids were rather popular even if their usually poor fit spoilt the appearance of the model when closed. This applies to the Aurora kit, too. Making equal gaps and gluing these movable parts shut flush with the rest of the body was rather laborious. The optically extremely distorting glass parts for the windscreen and the side windows were unusable and had to be replaced by clear sheet. The rear window was still just acceptable but today I wish I had replaced it, too. The kit had massive „wire“ wheels, similar to those of Tamiya's Morgan and Jaguar Mk II, but rather clumsy by comparison. As usual I made a set of real wire wheels. Since the (whitewall) tyres of the kit were very crude I replaced them by better ones from my spares box. I mixed a green metallic that was obviously popular on restored vintage Aston Martins because green metallic was (and still is?) Aston Martin's racing colour. Overall the kit was certainly far from being perfect, that may be the resaon why you don't see it finished very often. Nevertheless with some effort it can make a nice model.
