So I'm back in business on this after a little break due to work, moving house and building a couple of winged things.
Here is what I've been doing over the past couple of weeks.
I have finished off a couple more layers of primer, filling, sanding and and then a final primer coat of Halfords Primer.
The first primer layer I put down before the final filler was Valejo polyurethane filler. I've not had much joy with this, it clogged up my airbrush and it never gave me a smooth edge when I sanded through to the layer bellow even after allowing it to cure for a few days.
I also completed the deck planking, I started the first few with wood glue by pinned it as I did with the hull planks but this was slow work. After the end of my finger wend numb (which is still tingling after over a week!) from pushing in the pins I decided to use CA which made quick work of it and used wood glue for the last 'filler' planks at each side. The problem with the CA is I couldn't re position it so there are a couple of planks are a bit low at each end, so lesson learnt to be a bit more careful when positioning them. I noticed some re-positional 90 second glue in B&Q the other day so I'll probably use that next time.
After masking off the deck I put down a final primer using Halford primer which I'm really impressed with, I had seen in recommended on this forum but never used it. I also used the Halfords plastic primer on a plastic 1/700 O class destroyer I've been working on while waiting for things to dry/paint to cure on this project (which I will post when its finished) that also worked a treat and no cleaning my airbrush for one tiny part! I'm not sure if there is a major difference between the plastic and regular primer but made sense to use plastic on plastic? Any way...
I like to use acrylic paint over enamel but I've been having clogging problems with Humbrol paint in my airbrush, I though it might be the age of it as I bought it when I started this project a couple of years ago but I have some 3 year old tamiya paint which still airbrushes great. So for this and because of the size of this I though I would use the Humbrol acrylic spray as there is a shop a 5 minute walk from home that sells the entire Humbrol range at a decent price.
The primer is a bit dark so I've ended up layering almost a full can of the red 19 to kill the grey but I'm happy with the gloss finish. So that is where I'm up to, I've been waiting since Saturday for the red to cure properly so I can mask off and pain the next colour.
One of my other jobs it the strip the paint from the mast with white spirit once I find a suitable container long enough. The first attempt was to brush paint some Humbrol acrylic gloss I had but the finish is awful so I'm going to try again with the spray can.
Thanks
