  5. Harrier AV-8B II - 162074 / VL-07 of VMA-331 "Bumblebees", USMC, c1986 The latest model (build 13) in my Harrier Project is an AV-8B II of VMA-331 "The Bumblebees". It's an attempt to copy the aircraft as shown in some photos in the World Air Power Journal (Vol.6, 1991) and Andy Evans' BAe/McDonnell Douglas Harrier book (Crowood Press). As VMA-331 only flew the original AV-8B II variant before being disbanded, it was also an appropriate choice of VMA as I ultimately want to a Harrier from each VMA. The aircraft depicted, 162074 / VL-07, was later re-manufactured as an AV-8B II Plus, 165311. The original cockpit ended up back in the UK I believe. This is the Revell / Monogram kit and is pretty much built straight out of the box. I created some decals for this particular serial and modex and added some Verlinden Mk.82 Snakeyes and a couple of TERs from (I think as donated) a Hasegawa Weapons Kit. Harrier experts will notice a number of flaws, both in the kit and introduced by me. Assembly is pretty straightforward compared with the Hasegawa kit as it does not need to support the multi-variant build. In some ways I prefer it to the Hasegawa version, in others I don't. As i have two more to build, it's not wise to hate it! She's brush painted of course, using Life Color's acrylics: "Israeli Green" (FS34064) and "Extra Dark Sea Grey" (FS16099) for the upper surface camouflage and "Light Gull Grey" (FS36440) for the undersides. Pylons are painted in white (as per colour scheme set out in Aeroguide 16 for this specific aircraft). I used FS34079 for the Snakeyes. A coat of three of Klear sealed the paints ready for the decals (from the kit and bespoke as mentioned). Weathering from Tamiya and rounded off with a spray of Humbrol matt varnish to finish and seal. I'll close up the canopy once I've added an MDC (a story for another day). Things I'll "fix" for the next one ... re-position the nose formation lights and pitot tubes; extend the main undercarriage strut to make it easier to get it to sit firmly on the ground; re-shape the intakes where they meet the fuselage; heat the canopy to modify its shape for a better fit; get some sway braces for the TERs (I had to drill holes to use 0.15mm nickel wire to attach the bombs), fit the refuelling probe before painting and tone down the decals for the formation lights. Enough waffle, here she is ... Comments welcome as ever. Next up on the bench will be a Hasegawa AV-8B II Plus as flown by the Italian Navy (perhaps SaintsPhil and I can get our models together on the next Harrier SIG display at RAF Cosford - April 2013?).

  7. Erm...where did I say it was, Spence asked a question, I answered and offered my opinion on it's relative worth to me. The rest is your imagination. This is a discussion forum, people will ask questions and get all sorts of answers and opinions, as long as we stick to the subject at hand, the kit, then it's all fine. It's when people start discussing modelers and not models that things go wrong... Again, the subject is the Trumpy Vampire, stop trying to read in agenda's or ascribe motives. If people are being negative it's probably got something to do with the kit. The glass half full or empty nonsense is just excuse making. A bad kit is a bad kit. In other words... Play the ball, not the man.

  8. Think I might have solved all of this............................. When I next go to the local model shop, I will have a crucifix and a string of garlic round my neck and carry a wooden stake. That way I ain't taking no poo-poo from them Trumpy Vampires. Sorted !!!

  9. Every time you repeat this rather defensive retort, it seems to be to people simply stating they don't want this one kit. I'm really failing to see why that's being taken so personally by some? You want to be positive about the kit, that's cool, but being negative towards people that don't agree doesn't really make your point so well. You make some great models, and I'm sure you'll do the same with this one. That, IMO, is the best way to make your point, not having a go at anyone that expresses any negativity towards a random kit.

  11. OK here goes, after a 15 year sabbatical its time to get stuck into a kit I wanted back in the 90's after serving on IV(AC) Squadron in RAF Germany this is the intended outcome: Using The Trumpter kit: It will prove an interesting trip down memory lane, trying to remember details etc and also the need to fabricate decals for a green GR7! I'll be using Piero's resin bits too and will have a few parts spare bits if anyone's interested (modified strake to tale the pod etc) Load wise I'm torn between making a set of CBLS 200's and a pre-OpWarden fit using US CBU 87 b/b cluster bombs. I'll use the BOL rails as we fitted them just before I left the Sqn along with the CRV7 pods Wish me luck as the necessary skills need a little dust blowing off! This was my 1/48 Monagram conversion from back in the day! Steve

  13. Hi everyone! Here’s the latest kit off the bench, Hasegawa’s very new Typhoon, finished in 3 Squadron colours. This is a fine kit, has bags of additional weapons and though there are simplifications here and there, is very easy to build, with zero need for filler or additional work to have it ready for painting. I changed a few things: detailed the cockpit, repositioned the flaps and canards and opened the canopy – the latter not offered in the kit… This will appear in Military Illustrated Aircraft. I hope you like it! Spence

  14. New Britmodeller member here with first posting of a WIP. I have selected the Airfix Boing 727-200 as a fairly easy build. I have a great scheme in mind and just recieved the decals last week - but keeping that under wraps meantime! Selected the Airfix 727 over the Minicraft after reading various reviews - neither kit new to the market, but it was the colourscheme that prompted the build. First job - fill the windows with Apoxie Sculpt - as per Aaron Skinners Modelling Airliners book. Success with the photos! Fuselage with roll of Apoxie ready to be pushed through and the other half with the Apoxie pushed through. Leave for 24 hours then sand - hopefully! PS Hope the photos show up in the posting!

  15. Didn't feel like I'd done much but it would appear to have been quite an industrious year by my standards.... A-1 Skyraider - Airfix 1/72nd Scale F-86 Sabre - Airfix 1/72nd Scale Ford Trimotor - Airfix 1/72nd Scale A-4M Skyhawk - Matchbox 1/72nd Scale - Spent 30 years on my shelf in Isreali AF colours and then I decided to repaint and use the original markings - 1 option each side... A selection of 1/100 Scale Aircraft - Tamiya ME163 and ME262, Mirage III and Airfix's prepainted P-51 and FW190. Harrier GR7 - 1/144 Revell Bell X-1 - Dragon 1/144th Scale B-1B "Prototype" - Dragon 1/144th Scale Macchi C200 - Sweet 1/144th Scale Morser "Karl" - Dragon 1/144 Scale USS Belleau Wood - Dragon 1/700 Scale. Unfortunately I bought more than I built

  21. Wikipedia: Troll - In Internet slang, a troll (pron.: /ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1]extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. Jonathan, given that you've turned a thread about a kit into one about psychology to satisfy your own curiosity and have continued to try and bait people with the 'dude', 'sport', 'slick', 'bucko' thing I would have to agree, you're a troll. Perhaps you should take your half full glasses and peculiar affectations and go and play somewhere else.

  30. Tamiya's Chieftain is reckoned to be an odd hybrid of the Mk.2 and the Mk.5. I can believe it, having built their even older 1/25 Chieftain, which was sort of a Mk.2. Accurate Armour offer not only corrections if you want to make the advertised Mk.5, but also a number of conversions to later Marks up as far as the Mk.11. You can even go mad and use the Tamiya hull as the basis for a very nice ARV or AEV. These are, as has been spotted, very expensive, but reputedly worth every penny. A cheaper alternative is to try Castoff, who have recently resumed production of a small number of Chieftain gun-tank sets. Incidentally, the Revell (ex-Italeri) Patton is only an M47. The M48 is a rather different beast, despite the name, and is available from Tamiya as the M48A3 and from Academy as the M48A5.

  40. Yeah, I don't think so, been there, done that and learnt the lesson. I'm a lot more selective about what I build these days and there's just too many superb kits out there to be wasting time trying to fix something like that.

  42. i used Vallejo Colour yesterday for the first time - just a flat grey as undercoat... and boy does it work nicely in my AB... just thinned with water and a smidge of their retarder... nice coverage - just remember to keep the tip of the A/B clean (I noticed it begin to clog a little, can tell by the way the paint sprays)... and no smell - ideal for me working in the spare room. Have ordered German Grey (model air this time) to finish off my PaK38 and if I get good results form that i will look at using more for my Demag D7 build later this month......

  44. Oh, they know where it is - it's on a rubbish dump in North Dublin! *** (From the BBC news website:) Dr Ian Elliott worked at the Dunsink Observatory in Dublin when it was destroyed by fire on 3 October 1977. I heard about the fire on the morning news. I can tell you, that was a bit of a shock. My main concern was with the disruption to the work of the observatory. It was only afterwards that we realised that the bit of Apollo 11 Moon rock could not be found. It was gathered up with all of the other debris and dumped in the municipal dump which was conveniently just across the road. It is probably the only municipal dump in the world that has got a bit of Moon rock. If we'd had any perception of the rock's value, perhaps all of the debris would have been sifted by archaeologists and it might have been found. I am amazed that anyone puts a value of $5m on it, though there are a lot of mad people with money around so they might just pay that. It is a very big dump, I am afraid. It is worse than a needle in a haystack - you would never find it. *** At the risk of perpetuating a national stereotype, it could only happen in Ireland!

  45. Running defense procurement policy as subordinate to industrial policy has been the strategy of every British post war government. It's served both objectives remarkably badly.
