  1. This is my latest build of XV571for the Nav who actually flew in her during the display season. No doubt you Phantom freaks will spot some detail errors but I have to say that I'm not a Phantom chap. My time was spent on Bucc's, Choppers and Tornado. The Nav is happy so much so that he says it's a shrunken version of the real thing and that he can smell the cockpit! So that will do for me. Enjoy, Jim

  2. Hello all, Here is my recently completed 1/48 Revell B-1B Lancer for the Close Air Support group build. An absolute monster of a kit, the build thread is here I used Twobobs decals, SAC metal landing gear, Cutting Edge exhausts, Shull24 Sniper Pod, ALE-50 Decoy fairings and an Eduard etch set. All 20 JDAM's are from the spares - 10 GBU-31's and 10 GBU-38's. The Conventional weapons module for the GBU-38's was scratch-built. FOD inserts for the intakes are made from fine sponge. She's marked as 85-0085 'No Antidote II' of the 37th BS/28th BW, at Ellsworth AFB. The photos (there are a few!) Size comparison: Yep, that's 2 1/48 F-14's! Comments welcome, Thanks for looking, Dave

  3. It took me a lot to get a more or less acceptable result for this Italeri kit. Hungarian decoration for this born obsolete aircraft and therefore suffered many casualties. Hope you like it friends. Regards Fernando

  4. Chaps, Pretty pleased with result, first cross kit effort. I did limit myself to only using off the shelf decals, hence the odd stencil being incorrect. I must say I learnt a lot from this little model and its also left me with the bits to build a MKXIV! Rick.

  5. Just finished this one. Only a couple of pics for now as it's magazine bound. Build was straight forward apart from main seams. These required some work with CA glue and elbow grease. decals were a bit of work but patience and a little touch up paintwork and all was well. Painted with Xtracrylix and Tamiya paints and finished with Alclad aqua varnish. Decals were by Caracal. Hope you like. Thanks for looking

  6. Finished last week, Revell oldie (but goodie) I-16, in a small diorama, with Gaz truck from ACE. As per usual, built straight from the box, with Humbrol paints. Decals from the spares box I-16 is a great little kit, even for an old boxing (early 70's I think), Gaz truck was a pain in the bottom, although it was probably more to do with me than it! All thats missing are some ground crew, but I'm unaware of any Russian crew, ( I'll maybe convert some british or german airmen) As usual, all comments welcome Sean

  12. Kit - Monogram (updated 1993 issue) Paint - All enamels Decals - Slixx & Powerslide tyre decals Extras - None My third build since re-discovering my passion for American stock car building. Things that went well - overall painting, think I got just about everything right, not perfect, but a LOT better than my previous two builds. Things I got wrong - decals, placed the upper pin-stripe waayy too high on the body, and too much reliance on cyano for construction, hence when I came to put it all together last nigh the whole front suspension & axle assemble just broke apart from the frame. There's a word I could use, but I wont but I'm certain you know which one I mean Thanks for taking the time to look, as ever all comments, questions and crticism welcome. Ian

  16. Hello all, I thought I would try something different to my normal aircraft and ships. I was on a bit of a nostalgia trip a couple of months ago, recalling my oh so long ago childhood, and remembered that I used to have a goodly selection of Corgi and Dinky cars. One of my favourites back in 1964/5 was a Ford Fairlane. It was larger than my Matchbox cars, but I cannot recall which brand it was. I know it did have steerable wheels, you pressed down on the bonnet on the left or right and the wheels turned! Amazing to a 7 year old. Trawling the internet showed a couple of Fairlanes were available, so I got them, and decided on the '64 as it seemed easier than the '59 version. It is a long time since I did a car, and did not have great confidence. The kit itself looked good in the box, no flash to speak of, and moulded without much in the way of misalignment. It was in white plastic, but also had plenty of chromed runners too. Clear parts were crystal clear, and there were also some transparent red parts for the tail lights. Construction went fairly well, but I did find that the instruction guide left a bit to be desired as far as some parts placements went. The seat pan was to be fitted to the body shell rather than the floor pan before closing the body up. Other parts needed to be fitted to the body shell but also fit to specific areas on the floorpan too, but I could not figure out how to test fit to ensure alignment! There was what I thought to be a reasonable representation of the engine, but I did not finish it off well enough to show it off (it ended up being push out of alignment when I got near the end of the build). A super-detailer could really go to work on that though. I found internet photographs confusing, nothing seemed to agree with other pictures. Anyway, some photographs: The interior came up quite well, I chose to paint it in my own favourite colours, not necessarily what a Fairlane would have appeared in. The decal dials went down nicely over some moulded detail on the dashboard, and I covered them in Canopy glue to represent glazing. For the paintwork, I used Halfords spray paint and was quite happy with the results, but I need to figure out how to get a more glossy finish. I used grey primer then sprayed on the blue, and tried using car polish to make it shine, but I still have an eggshell finish to the colour - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The silver stripes down the side were Humbrol polished aluminium, but hopefully one day I will try to use foil to chrome another car up along those stripes. I had a spot of bother closing the shell up, but at least all four wheel touch the deck! One other thing I want to do in future is remove all the chrome plating and spray/foil fenders etc. All in all I enjoyed this, I know it is not a patch on the other cars within this forum. Thanks for looking

  17. I've had the same problem with matt varnish bloomimg after spraying in the garage when the tumble drier has be used. I recovered the situation with a coat of gloss varnish then another coat of matt when the humidity had returned to normal a few days later.

  19. Hi Colin, I thin them with cellulose thiner a bit on the thin side perhaps 60% thinners to start with. I then try a fine line and thin more if needed to achive a nice fine line with no overspary, with the compressor set at around 10psi, Drying time is around the two to three days mark to be sure. Rick

  26. I hope the worst is that they'll tell us is that they can't spot the difference between the normal and CB (aka Mk.XVI) top cowls and won't be botthered to make two of them I agree, a good 1/48 Mk.IX is way overdue, and Tamiya enjoys torturing us, so c'mon Eduard, give it your best shot! 28. Just a few, not in any order of build. As per usual, a mix of Vallejo, Xcrylic and Tamiya and some a mixture of all. Mostly OOB but with some added decals and harness'. All Airfix. Yes, I know about the dust and sorry for the low quality pictures, just grabbed the camera and found a sunbeam! Working on a few other builds and hoping to find a better way to hide the panel lines! Please feel free to pass comment, good or bad! Rick.

  30. after a lot of faffing about I have finally finished my Airfix 'Mild and Bitter'. I have tried to represent the very tired, weathered appearance these high-time B-26's seem to display in photographs. I have used the excellent salt weathering techniques seen on elsewhere this site which I think worked reasonably well, especially 'fading' the RAF Dark Green which was apparently painted on the wings, nose and tail of this and other Marauders at the time. I am sure I will be open for correction by more knowledgeable experts, but I am pleased, hope you like her too, and many thanks for Wes for providing the markings and to Goose for the kit

  34. Dear, Thank you very much for your support for our efforts. Sometimes support is really needed because production preparation of any model is not a little work and time. This work is our hobby and we are pleased that our models make someone happy.

  35. I just bought a B.I yesterday at a local model show and in the box it looks very nice. I'm not looking forward to the problems with the transparencies, and I was not sure about buying it.. but in the end I was convinced by: 1) the fact I've always liked the lines of the Hampden 2) the special price of £16...

  38. I still miss the old SAM format. In fact I get more pleasure re-reading the old ones, with their fuzzy black & white photos, than the new format, however successful it is. The old format felt like modelling amongst old friends, warts and all, and I still refer to them. The new format feels like celebrity and angst and can be alienating in what is written. The issues I received before not renewing my subscription sit in a pile and might as well be in the bin. Simple as that. Some may love the new format. Good for them. To me the real SAM is as dead and buried as Scale Models and Frog. It's like the pub on the corner that still has the same name on the sign but has changed beyond all recognition and attracts a completely different clientele. I can remember when I first discovered it, several thousand miles from England, and how much I liked the format. When the new format magazines came along with their increasing emphasis on big colour photos and large scale, museum quality, celebrity modelling SAM remained for a while like an old friend. Slightly old-fashioned by comparison but familiar and comforting. In its revamp to compete with the new wave that followed it somehow lost its soul together with its original USP. Editorials are supposed to reflect the collective viewpoint of the magazine towards aspects of its subject matter, either generally or in respect of a specific topic, often related to that issue's contents or current news, or sometimes to pose questions about them, even controversially. Since the writing in a magazine is essentially the "glue" that holds all the visuals together and the editorial kicks it all off I think good writing is important. Poorly written articles in a magazine dedicated to a special interest seem a contradiction in terms. But let's face it the prevailing concept that all change must perforce be good and always result in something better is not limited to modelling magazines.
